« The Wind That Shakes the
Barley » raconte l’histoire d’un
jeune homme du comté de Wexford
qui renonce à son couple pour
pouvoir faire partie des « Hommes
Unis », ou the « United Irishmen ».
La chanson a lieu pendant la
Rébellion Irlandaise de 1798. En
effet, inspirés par les révolutions
américaine et française, les United
Irishmen se révoltèrent contre la
domination anglaise entre mai et
septembre 1798. Alors que le
conflit fut bref, les pertes humaines
furent énormes. Aujourd’hui on
estime qu’entre 20 000 et 50 000
personnes sont mortes pendant la
rébellion, la plupart étant des
rebelles ou des sympathisants de
leur cause.
Dans la chanson, « Oulart Hollow »
fait référence à la bataille de
Oulart Hill du 27 mai 1798, une
victoire décisive pour les rebelles
irlandais.
